"Prometheus Bound" is a play written by the ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus, which tells the story of the Titan Prometheus, who is punished by Zeus for giving fire to humanity and helping them in other ways. Prometheus is chained to a rock and tormented by the gods, including Hermes and Hephaestus, while he remains defiant and refuses to apologize for his actions.
The Oceanids are sea nymphs or goddesses in Greek mythology who are the daughters of the Titan Oceanus and his wife Tethys. They are often depicted as beautiful and benevolent spirits who assist sailors and protect ships and sailors from danger. In "Prometheus Bound," the chorus consists of Oceanids who sympathize with Prometheus and seek to comfort him in his suffering. They also speak of their own sorrow at seeing such a noble and wise creature punished so cruelly, and they urge Prometheus to relent and apologize to Zeus in order to be released from his suffering.
